MA Application

Process

Choosing your course & entry requirement

Before you begin applying, you’ll need to know what course you intend to pursue. At postgraduate level, we offer:

Within the the PGCert, PGDip, and MA, we offer a wide range of distinct pathways from Biblical studies, mission, and theology to ecology, community development, and social justice. You can find out more about our courses at this link.

Entry Requirements
  • BA (Hons) in a relevant subject with a 2:1 or higher.
No BA (Hons) in Theology? No sweat!

MA students with a 2:1 or higher in a non-theological degree can jump straight into their MA as long as they take Theological Engagement and Research Methods as the first of their MA classes. If you do not want to use one of your electives here or the class isn’t offered during your first semester, you can complete the Pre-MA programme above.

Lower than a 2:1? Let’s talk.

For those with non-theological degrees lower than a 2:1, we may require a Pre-MA programme as part of your acceptance to NTC to ensure they thrive in our postgraduate programme.

The Pre-MA programme can be completed in 2 ways:

    1. Students can complete our self-directed Pre-MA programme with 3 modules (more details here)
    2. Students can complete the Practical Theology class from the self-directed Pre-MA programme and take Knowing God in Christ and Introduction to Biblical Studies at undergraduate level. Undergraduate classes will only run during term time

When and How to Apply

All postgraduate applicants apply directly to NTC by clicking here. Postgraduates can begin in the Autumn or Spring semesters.

For MA applications, you’ll need to submit:

  1. A completed application form

  3. Two academic references
  4. £30 application fee

In most cases, MA students are not required to complete an interview. However, we may contact you to arrange a meeting if your previous studies are in a different field or if you are seeking non-traditional entry’ to add ‘or if you are an international student who would require a visa’

Once the process is complete, the admissions team will contact you about its decision. If you are admissible, you will be given either an Unconditional Offer of Acceptance or a Conditional Offer of Acceptance. We will also inform you at this stage of any financial aid awarded to you by the College.

PhD Application

Process

Entry Requirements

  • BA (Hons) at 2:1 or equivalent in a related subject
  • UK Master’s degree with the following marks:
    • An overall average at or above 65%
    • Dissertation marked at or above 65%
    • No mark below 55% or international equivalent

Candidates without formal research experience (i.e., a dissertation) may be required to undertake all or part of an MA as the first stage of their PhD.

Preparing to Apply

Before you begin applying to our PhD, you’ll need to have some idea of a research topic and potential supervisor. The easiest way to find a suitable supervisor is to look through the faculty page and see where your interests line up with our faculty. Please email faculty directly: they will be happy to discuss possible research proposals with prospective students. It is strongly recommended that you consult prospective supervisors about your research proposal before applying. If you cannot get in touch with a faculty member or you need advice before contacting one, email our admissions team at admissions@nazarene.ac.uk, and we’ll help you to find the right supervisor.

Once you’ve found a potential supervisor, you will normally discuss the shape of a research proposal. NTC requires an initial proposal of roughly 250 words and a bibliography of 10 key sources. Your potential supervisor and the admissions team can offer guidance.

Applying to a PhD involves a lot of communication between applicants and NTC. This is completely normal. Don’t be afraid to contact us during this stage!

When and How to Apply

All PhD applicants apply directly to NTC using the form below. PhD candidates can begin in the Autumn or Spring semesters. We do not have a closing date for application, but we strongly recommend applying at least 3 months before a potential starting date for non-visa students and at least 1 year before a potential starting date for students requiring visas.

For PhD applications, you’ll need to submit:

  1. A completed application form
  2. £40 application fee
  3. ~250 word thesis proposal including a bibliography of up to 10 sources
  4. Scans of certificates, diplomas, and transcripts
  5. Two academic references. Preferably academic or employee
  6. Academic writing sample such as a research essay
  7. If English is not your native language, you may be required to submit an English competency score through IELTS, TOEFL, or other equivalent exams.

If you are having difficulty in using the online forms, please call 0161 445 3063 or email admissions@nazarene.ac.uk.
