Beckie Corner

Beckie Corner, BA, ’20

My passion and favourite classes had always been those relating to social justice.

When Beckie was a second year student in 2018, she had this to say.

My name is Beckie, I am from Chester. I was originally studying Social Science at Bath University. I completed my first year, but I felt something was missing. I was learning about social justice and reform, but I wanted to include my faith in my studies. When I heard about NTC, I realised that I could learn more about God and apply this to social justice and ministry. The close community also really appealed to me as I wanted to grow spiritually as well as academically.

Right now, I really enjoyed being able to write an exegesis essay for Biblical Studies. I found the process of learning about the context and different interpretations of a passage really interesting. Similarly, life at NTC has deepened and shaped my faith in many ways. I have had to question many of my core beliefs as I have learnt alternative opinions in class. This has sometimes felt uncomfortable however, it has made me read more to formulate my own views. If you love people and community then you will love it here. But you have to be prepared to be challenged

Now as an NTC graduate, Beckie has this to say:

Since I last spoke with NTC, I graduated with my BA (Hons) in Theology! Our final year took place during the first COVID lockdown. It was quite sad to not have our final classes together in person as we were a really friendly cohort, but it was so nice to be reunited at graduation a year later!
The lockdown gave me the opportunity to reflect on what I had learnt at NTC and to consider what my next steps would be. My passion and favourite classes had always been those relating to social justice.
After NTC, I went on to complete my Masters in Human Trafficking, Migration and Organised Crime. I then started work at City Hearts (now called Causeway) as a caseworker for survivors of modern slavery and human trafficking. I met so many strong people whose resilience is inspiring.
I left City Hearts after getting married on the back lawn outside the College. I then began a new role in Greater Manchester Police in the Sex Offender Manager Unit. This has not been an easy position, and I feel like I am learning more each day. My job is to protect the public by using various tools at my disposal and to investigate potential crime.

This role continues to challenge my perspective on life. I am thankful for the foundation of faith, friendships and critical thinking that NTC provided. It was a place where my relationship with God deepened, and I made best friends for life. For anyone thinking of applying to NTC, I 100% recommend it!
