The 2021 Didsbury Lectures

Beyond Charity: Rethinking Gift and Community with Paul

Venue: The lectures were delivered face-to-face in the Chapel on campus, and also live streamed. You can view them again on our Public Lectures Playlist on Youtube.

Modern Western charity easily becomes toxic: it can demean and disempower the recipient, creating patterns of one-sided dependency.  After tracing the roots of this phenomenon, these lectures turn to the letters of Paul to find a theologically grounded vision of community, characterised by mutuality, solidarity, and respect.  Paul enables us to challenge some modern notions of altruism and self-sacrifice and offers resources for healthier ways of ‘building back better’ for the common good.

Lecture titles:

1. Modern Charity: Where did we go wrong?

2. Gifts within the Story of Christ

3. Solidarity and Respect in Paul’s communities

4. Should we Give Ourselves Away? Another Vision of the Common Good
