Bursaries & Scholarships

Full-time students who have an average of 72% or above when they progress from first to second year or second to third year will automatically receive an award of £100 to be announced at graduation. Students who have an average of 78% or above when they progress from first to second year or second to third year will automatically receive an award of £750 to be announced at graduation.

Full time Students on the BA or BA (Honours) course, who have been members of the Church of the Nazarene within the British Isles prior to initial registration on the course, who continue in active membership, and who attend and participate in a local Church of the Nazarene, may receive annual bursaries of 20% of the balance of the tuition fee not covered by any loan, award or other bursary or may receive a 5% rebate on all tuition fees.

This policy applies to Children of Full-Time Faculty Members from Institutions of the EURASIA Region Education Council (EEC). Children of full-time Faculty Members of institutions which are part of the EURASIA Education Council will receive full tuition remission as full-time students of Nazarene Theological College Manchester subject to the following conditions:

• The student is under the age of 25 at the commencement of the course.
  The student is enrolled on a full-time residential course leading to an undergraduate qualification (BA, DipHE, CertHE).
• The student pays all additional fees, including the annual University of Manchester per capita validation fee, accommodation fees, and any other fees that are not tuition fees.

For the purposes of this policy, all students who are citizens or residents of the European Union will be expected to show evidence of application for all possible state aid (loans, grants, bursaries) available to them. Should the student receive state aid, NTC will cover only the balance between the amount shown to have been received and the amount of tuition owing to NTC. Should the student be refused support and be able to give evidence of this, NTC will remit the tuition in full.

Students who are graduates of Nazarene Theological College who apply within five years of completing either an undergraduate degree or a Master’s Degree who meet the criteria will receive a 10% loyalty bursary to be deducted from the amount students will pay in their first year of study only after all other NTC awards are applied.

Full-time students from the UK and EU who are not eligible for Student Loan or grants may be eligible for a Community Service Award of up to 20% of tuition equivalent on demonstration of financial need. Full time students from outside the UK and EU may be eligible for a Community Service Award equivalent to 30% of tuition on demonstration of financial need.

Additionally, students who are passport holders of a country whose Gross National Income is below a recognised amount ($3,995 per capita in 2020) will be charged at UK tuition rates rather than non-UK rates. Providing they can demonstrate financial need, they may also be eligible for a Community Service Award of up to 40% of the balance of their tuition fees equivalent after all other awards have been deducted.

The Dorothy Thompson Award is a Community Service scholarship awarded on an annual basis to one or more Postgraduate students. It requires them to serve – for a stipulated number of hours per week – in the College Library under the direction of the College Librarian. This Community Service Award will cover up to the equivalent of 20% of the tuition fees in any academic year.

A bursary of up to 50% of Postgraduate tuition fee is awarded to emerging leaders and theologians within the UK, with eligibility restricted to Black, Asian and minority ethnic groups. Maximum of three awards in total may be awarded per academic year. The award is for one year for MA candidates and for a maximum of three full-time equivalent years, renewable annually upon application, for PhD student award holders. The bursary is not to be combined with other bursaries.

Church leaders within Greater Manchester, who are employed full-time by their Church, are eligible to apply for a 20% discount on Postgraduate tuition fees, for full-time or part-time study. The applicant must be a member of, or willing to join, the Churches Together for Greater Manchester and/or Evangelical Alliance group. The bursary is not to be combined with other bursaries.

NTC offers and accepts a range of bursaries for CoTN members. Full-time students from the Eurasia Region students who are not eligible for Student Loan or grants and who are members of the Church of the Nazarene for a minimum of one year immediately prior to registration and remain in active membership may be eligible for a bursary of up to 25% of tuition on demonstration of financial need. Part-time students may be eligible for a bursary of up to 15% of tuition on demonstration of financial need. Full time students from outside of the Eurasia Region and who have been members of the Church of the Nazarene for a minimum of one year immediately prior to registration and remain in active membership may be eligible for a bursary of up to 40% of tuition on demonstration of financial need. Part-time students may be eligible for a bursary of up to 20% of tuition on demonstration of financial need. Ordained or district licensed ministers in the Church of the Nazarene may receive a bursary of up to 10% of the balance of their tuition fee. The Postgraduate Teaching Scholarship is intended to support the Research Student’s professional and academic development. It will provide supervised teaching experiences under the oversight of a mentor. Students categorised as being eligible for this award will be those who would directly benefit, in the course of their studies, from the experience of teaching others in a supervised environment. By invitation only.

The Postgraduate Teaching Assistantship is normally available to returning students only (i.e. year two and beyond) and is designed to give the postgraduate student experience in class preparation and class assessment, and offers limited experience of mentored teaching. It amounts to £750 each year for each appointment (up to three to be made in any year). Teaching Assistantships are renewable. By appointment only.

This scholarship is funded by the Board of General Superintendents of the Church of the Nazarene. It is designed for full-time MA students with a sense of God’s call into full-time Christian ministry. Scholarships are paid to the College to apply to tuition fees, room or board. Students are required to cooperate with the supervisors of the programme and to preach a minimum of ten or more times a year.

MWRC Junior Fellows shall be elected from amongst applicants who are postgraduate research students of the University of Manchester and, normally, registered for doctoral research through Nazarene Theological College. Research students registered through the College shall be eligible for a bursary award that is the equivalent of 50% of tuition fees upon election. This award shall be granted from the time of election and shall continue during the normal registration period. As part of this award the student will liaise with the Director of the MWRC and assist in the work of this Centre throughout the period of their award for a stipulated number of hours.

This fellowship is by appointment only.

This fellowship provides support for Nazarene graduates recommended by the relevant Church of the Nazarene Regional Authorities for postgraduate research at Nazarene Theological College. The award covers the full amount of tuition, University and examination fees during the academic year and makes a major contribution towards living costs while candidates are resident in Manchester.
