Integrate professional counselling training with an exploration of faith

How to Apply Open Days

Course Overview

The BA (Hons) in Theology (Counselling) is a unique UK-based programme that integrates professional counselling training with an exploration of faith, religion, and social justice. Students will pursue rigorous academic studies while gaining valuable placement experience. The result is a professionally-ready graduate who is able to integrate personal, social, and theological reflection into counselling practice.

The programme has been designed using the Scope of Practice and Education (SCoPEd) framework, a shared framework developed by professional counselling bodies. As a result, upon completion, graduates are able to apply for counselling membership with UK professional bodies, including the British Association for Counselling and Psychotherapy (BACP), the Association of Christian Counsellors (ACC), and the National Counselling and Psychotherapy Society (NCPS).

Why NTC?

Study for a degree validated by the University of Manchester, recognised by employers, churches and institutions worldwide, while experiencing NTC’s own approach to formative theological education. You’ll learn alongside people from different traditions, putting faith into practice through worship, study and everyday community life. We equip you for 21st-century Christian life and ministry, applying theological learning in practice — and our graduates go on to thrive across every sphere of life, from community work and ethics to leadership and ministry.

About your programme

Students will receive a minimum of 360 credits while on this course.

Our entry requirements are designed to accommodate a variety of educational backgrounds:

Traditional entry: we welcome applicants with 2 A-Levels, Highers, or their equivalent.

Non-Traditional Entry: We recognise the value of diverse experiences. If you don’t meet the traditional criteria, don’t worry; non-traditional entry paths are available. Contact us at admissions@nazarene.ac.uk for more information.

International students: applicants whose first language is not English need to demonstrate their English proficiency. Undergraduate students need a minimum IELTS score of 6.0, or its equivalent, overall.

Applicants to the BA (Hons) in Theology (Counselling) degree path will need to demonstrate their suitability to undertake this programme, which will include experience of working with people, and a capacity to work with people from diverse age, faith and cultural backgrounds.

The course involves students undertaking a placement during their second year of study (or equivalent for part-time students). Some of the placements include specified contact with children or vulnerable adults; this is known as Regulated Activity. Students will need to apply for an Enhanced Disclosure of criminal records through the DBS. The Placement Manager will contact you with further instructions on how to apply for a DBS before you can begin your placement.

In placement, students will evaluate their own counselling and professional practice and demonstrate professional counselling competence by completing 100 hours of supervised practice for their portfolio.
The placement is credit-bearing at Levels 5 and 6. In Level 5, the placement is in the spring term after the student has demonstrated readiness to practice. In Level 6, placement is spread across the autumn and spring terms, usually over 20 weeks (10 weeks in each semester).

Full-time and flexible part-time routes are available. Full-time study is for three years and up to six years part-time.

Close to forty different nationalities are represented in the College’s diverse student body. NTC welcomes students from outside the UK, either for full courses or for Study Abroad periods, and the presence of a variety of cultures enriches the life of the whole community.

To foster the self-awareness and reflexivity crucial for effective client relationships, the programme strongly recommends that each student receives personal therapy during this programme. We encourage each student to receive 20 hours of counselling over the course of their programme. Students will be required to pay for personal therapy, which ranges from £20 to £60 a session. This cost is not included in tuition fees. All personal therapists must be professionally accredited by a recognised UK counselling body.

In placement, students will need to have a placement supervisor who is a professional counsellor. The supervisor must be approved by NTC staff. Supervision costs generally range from £40 to £60 per session and are not included in tuition. Students will need to have a supervision session twice per month while on placement in Level 5 and Level 6. Students are responsible for the costs of supervision.

All students will take part in one experiential weekend. During this weekend, students will participate in self-awareness activities that deepen the personal development process that underpins this programme. Attendance is required because the hours go toward personal development hours.

Grounded in the core principles of person-centred counselling, this course emphasises the therapeutic relationship and the creation of a facilitative environment for personal growth and change. You will develop both professionally and personally through experiential learning, critical reflection, and self-awareness. Person-centred values provide the relational bedrock that shapes all aspects of your training and practice.

You will explore how your person-centred practice may thoughtfully work with insights from a range of theoretical, socio-cultural, and spiritual perspectives—helping to ensure you are equipped to respond flexibly and ethically to diverse client needs.

Alongside this foundation, you will gain a comparative understanding of other key approaches, including CBT and psychodynamic models. Training is designed to meet the expectations of professional practice, with a focus on ethical integrity, clinical competence, and the practical skills required to work with clients in both face-to-face and remote settings.

Every module on this programme is required. That’s because the course meets professional counselling standards, and each unit has its place in your training. You’ll explore theology and counselling side by side, so what you learn in one shapes how you practise the other. By the end, you’ll have the grounding to work as a professional counsellor.
