Community. You hear the word thrown around a lot. For us, it is not just a buzzword—we live it. This Mental Health Awareness Week, we’re reflecting on what it means to belong, to be seen, and to journey together. The theme for Mental Health Awareness Week this year could not be more fitting. At NTC, community isn’t something added on to the academic experience. It’s woven—rooted, even—into every part of who we are as a confessional college.
Mental health is shaped by many factors—but being connected, supported, and known can make a profound difference. Community plays a vital role in supporting wellbeing. Our dedicated chaplaincy team, pastoral care groups, faculty, academic office, and learning enhancement team support, and culture of kindness all help create an environment where students can flourish—spiritually, academically, emotionally, and socially.
Being part of a deep learning community like NTC means having the space to bring your full self, to share your story, and to hear the stories of others. It’s a place where authenticity, kindness, and belonging are nurtured, not just expected.
Studying at NTC is about formation. Students come here to study theology, and to explore vocation, make deep-rooted friendships, ask deep questions, worship, and grow holistically. That kind of journey is rarely linear, and never solitary:
- It’s the encouragement and fellowship over coffee.
- It’s the prayers lifted up in your pastoral care group.
- It’s the shared joy of discovering something new, together, in our classrooms.
- It’s the shared lifting of hands in worship at chapel.
Whether you are gathering for morning prayers, sharing coffee and conversation with faculty, staff and fellow students, worshipping as a college at chapel, or engaging in dialogue about faith, life, and learning—community is at the heart of NTC.

Introduction to Christian Community Development (Undergraduate Module)
This vision starts early. In our Introduction to Christian Community Development undergraduate module, we explore what it means to build flourishing communities informed by scripture, theology, and practice. We examine questions of power, prophetic imagination, and the church’s call to engage in social transformation. In this module, you are encouraged to reflect on your role in community, and how faith can be a catalyst for justice, belonging, and change.
Community Development and Social Change (MA Pathway)
Our MA in Theology (Community Development and Social Change pathway) is another way we explore the theme of community academically. It’s a journey for those driven by curiosity and care, and a calling to understand and reshape the world through faith-based community development.
In this programme, our faculty and students explore important contemporary issues together, combining theological depth with practical reflection on their own community settings. It equips students to lead transformation through a thoughtful—and prayerful—integration of spirituality, philosophy, politics, and practice.
This Is Our Community
This week, we’re reflecting together: What does community mean to you?
Maybe community is gathering with your pastoral care group—a space where you are known, prayed for, and encouraged. Maybe it’s a friend who quietly checks in, the one who notices when you’re not quite yourself. Maybe it’s the lecturer who challenges and champions you, who sees not just your questions but your potential.
Perhaps it’s the beauty of walking through the Rose Garden in Spring, or the peace sharing a moment of stillness with others on the Back Lawn. It might be rolling up your sleeves during community work days, doing the small but sacred shared work of tending the space we inhabit.
Or maybe it’s found in the digital places where learning and life unfold—discussion boards, prayer messages, and video chats with fellow students or our Online Programme Development Lead—Kate—that remind you that, even if elsewhere, you are not alone.
It could be your placement hub, your home congregation, or another community you serve week by week—the people who shape you, and who call you to love deeply and live justly.
