Dr Samuel Hildebrandt
Senior Lecturer in Biblical Studies (Old Testament)
I grew up in northern Germany but have also spent much time in Canada, where I met my wife, Darcy, and in Scotland, where I completed my PhD. My research and teaching covers a wide range of Old Testament materials and Hebrew language. Recently, I have written essays on Bible and loneliness, as well as the book Vast as the Sea: Hebrew Poetry and the Human Condition which reads the Psalms, Job, Jeremiah, and Ecclesiastes alongside psychological research to discover how these books speak about anxieties, trauma, and mental health. I currently serve as the SOTS Book List editor, finalise an edited book on loneliness in the Hebrew Bible (LHBOTS), and have begun a commentary on the reception history of Numbers (Wiley). I always welcome any and all inquiries about MA and PhD studies. When I am away from the office I bike on England’s winding roads, marvel at trees, lawns, and hedgework, drink tea and chat with Darcy about everything and nothing, and enjoy every moment with our children, Sophie and Ezekiel.
