Bachelor of Arts (Hons) in Theology (Counselling)

The BA (Hons) in Theology (Counselling) is a unique UK-based programme that integrates professional counselling training with an exploration of faith, religion, and social justice. Students will pursue rigorous academic studies while gaining valuable placement experience. The result is a professionally-ready graduate who is able to integrate personal, social, and theological reflection into counselling practice.

The programme has been designed using the Scope of Practice and Education (SCoPEd) framework, a shared framework developed by professional counselling bodies. As a result, upon completion, graduates are able to apply for counselling membership with UK professional bodies, including the British Association for Counselling and Psychotherapy (BACP), the Association of Christian Counsellors (ACC), and the National Counselling and Psychotherapy Society (NCPS).

Our Approach to Counselling

Grounded in the core principles of person-centred counselling, this course emphasises the therapeutic relationship and the creation of a facilitative environment for personal growth and change. You will develop both professionally and personally through experiential learning, critical reflection, and self-awareness. Person-centred values provide the relational bedrock that shapes all aspects of your training and practice.

You will explore how your person-centred practice may thoughtfully work with insights from a range of theoretical, socio-cultural, and spiritual perspectives—helping to ensure you are equipped to respond flexibly and ethically to diverse client needs.

Alongside this foundation, you will gain a comparative understanding of other key approaches, including CBT and psychodynamic models. Training is designed to meet the expectations of professional practice, with a focus on ethical integrity, clinical competence, and the practical skills required to work with clients in both face-to-face and remote settings.

Employment Prospects

Graduates may go on to register with a counselling body, such as the BACP, ACC, or NCPS, and practice as professional counsellors. Graduates can also go into Pastoral Ministry, Chaplaincy, and a wide range of roles in the charitable sector.

Students combine their studies with a practical placement in their second and third years. In placement, students will evaluate their own counselling and professional practice and demonstrate professional counselling competence by completing 100 hours of supervised practice as part of their portfolio.
The placement is credit-bearing in Level 5 and Level 6. In Level 5, the placement is in the spring term after the student has demonstrated readiness to practice. In Level 6, placement is spread across the autumn and spring terms, usually over 20 weeks (10 weeks in each semester).

Accreditation and Diversity

Teaching and Learning Methods

NTC offers small class sizes, with classes generally ranging from 5 to 35 students. Most classes run in a weekly format, and are complemented by intensive sessions in January and May. Teaching methods include lectures, seminars and class discussions, oral presentations, group work, individual tutorials, directed reading, placement learning, case studies, individual supervision, fitness to practice, pass/fail assessment, and student-led seminars.

Methods of Assessment

We try to include a wide variety of assessment methods throughout our programmes. Types of formative (non-credit bearing) assessment include individual tutorials, on-site visits, group discussions, written and oral feedback on essays. Our Summative (credit-bearing) assessments include research essays, case studies, group projects, individual projects, placement assessment, personal reflections, presentations, book reviews, a limited number of module examinations, and a research dissertation.

Personal Counselling

To foster the self-awareness and reflexivity crucial for effective client relationships, the program strongly recommends that each student receives personal therapy during this programme. We encourage each student to receive 20 hours of counselling over the course of their programme. Students will be required to pay for personal therapy, which ranges from £20 to £60 a session. This cost is not included in tuition fees. All personal therapists must be professionally accredited by a recognized UK counselling body.

Experiential Weekend

All students will take part in one experiential weekend. During this weekend, students will participate in self-awareness activities that deepen the personal development process that underpins this programme. Attendance is required because the hours go toward personal development hours.

Supervision

In placement, students will need to have a placement supervisor who is a professional counsellor. The supervisor must be approved by NTC staff. Supervision costs generally range from £40 to £60 per session and are not included in tuition. Students will need to have a supervision session twice per month while on placement in Level 5 and Level 6. Students are responsible for the costs of supervision

Students will receive a minimum of 360 credits while on this course.
